SDE Feature Class
Summary
Major Powerlines are used to show the spatial location of major high tension overhead powerlines in Loudoun County, VA.
This feature class/shapefile is for the Homeland Infrastructure Foundation Level Database (HIFLD) https://gii.dhs.gov/HIFLD as well as the Energy modelling and simulation community and contains Electric Power Transmission lines in the U.S. greater than or equal to 100 volts. It has been modified to include new line additions built after the dataset was published.
This dataset was captured and provided to Loudoun County by Kimley-Horn in 2024, which update previous features data back to 2009.
Dataset was modified in February 2025 to include transmission line segments that have been approved by Virginia’s State Corporation Commission (SCC) but not built.
Description
This feature class/shapefile represents electric power transmission lines. Transmission Lines are the system of structures, wires, insulators and associated hardware that carry electric energy from one point to another in an electric power system. Lines are operated at relatively high voltages varying from 138 kV up to 765 kV, and are capable of transmitting large quantities of electricity over long distances. Underground transmission lines are included for an approximately two mile segment west of the Town of Leesburg. The following updates have been made since the previous release: 1,166 features added. Downloaded by Kimley-Horn on May 30, 2024.
It has been modified by Kimley-Horn to include new line additions built after the dataset was published. View inline attribution for line by line sourcing.
Data Schema was modified in September 2024 to capture the Voltage and Voltage Class information. Data schema was modified in February 2025 to include status information, stating if the line is built or only in the approved phase.
