Abstract:
Pedestrian sidewalks identifies the centerline of all the public sidewalks that exist in the town of Lovettsville, VA. The sidewalks also contain fields that identifies the Width & Condition of each existing feature. The sidewalks were collected using both heads up digitizing in ArcMap 9.1 with March 2007 digital orthophotography & GPS collection in the field. The GPS was used to collect the sidewalks that didn't exist on the digital orthophoto due to summer/fall construction. |
Metadata elements shown with blue text are defined in the Federal Geographic Data Committee's (FGDC) Content Standard for Digital Geospatial Metadata (CSDGM). Elements shown with green text are defined in the ESRI Profile of the CSDGM. Elements shown with a green asterisk (*) will be automatically updated by ArcCatalog. ArcCatalog adds hints indicating which FGDC elements are mandatory; these are shown with gray text.

Pedestrian sidewalks were collected at the request of the town of Lovettsville for locational information & town mapping purposes. They can be used in town related planning projects, including transportation, to map the present infrastructure of the town.
Data are stored in the corporate ArcSDE Geodatabase as a line feature class. The coordinate system is Virginia State Plane (North), Zone 4501, datum NAD83 HARN (vertical datum, if applicable, NAVD88), US Survey foot units.

The Width & Condition attributes were both field collected after all of the sidewalks were digitized from the 2007 photos. The Width attribute was collected to the nearest whole U.S. foot value, i.e. 3 or 4 foot. The Condition attribute was collected with the Lovettsville town manager using a visual determination of Good, Fair, or Poor.

Centerline of existing pedestrian sidewalks were captured from March 2007 digital orthophotograph using "heads-up", or on screen, digitizing in ArcMap 9.1. The centerline of a sidewalk was visually digitzed at an ArcMap reference scale of 1:500. This scale allowed for a balance between a more accurate visual capture of centerline without alot of pixelation of the digital photo. The sidewalk centerlines were digitized by first zooming into a street area of Lovettsville, starting in the NE area of town. Next, an editing session was started on a previously created Sidewalks feature class. The Sketch & Arc tools were used to visually digitize the centerline of all sidewalks. Sidewalk features were extended through driveways & parking lots, but stopped at all road edges, using either existing Road Casing Data or visual edge from digital orthophoto. The Width & Condition attributes were collected in the field after digitization was complete.
GPS collection of new sidewalk centerlines not shown on March 2007 digital orthophoto due to later construction date. Centerlines collected by walking along the centerline of sidewalks while collecting a line feature. The Width & Condition attributes were collected at the same time. GPS data downloaded from unit & then differentially corrected in GPS Pathfinder using base files from CORS at Gaithersburg, MD. The Standard Automatic Code Correction process was used to correct the data, which resulted in a predominately sub-meter accuracy of .5 to 1 meters (1.5 to 3 feet). The differentially corrected data was then exported from Pathfinder as a sample shapefile & copied into the existing Lovettsville PGDB & corresponding feature class.
GPS update/collection of new sidewalks along the new N Church St & Town Center Development area near the town square. Centerlines collected by walking along the centerline of sidewalks while collecting a line feature. A data dictionary was used to collect the targeted attrbute values. GPS data downloaded from unit & then differentially corrected in GPS Pathfinder using base files from CORS at Hagerstown, MD. The Standard Automatic Code Correction process was used to correct the data, which resulted in a predominately sub-meter accuracy of .5 to 1 meters (1.5 to 3 feet).
