Abstract:

The Virginia Scenic Rivers Program was enabled by the Virginia Scenic Rivers Act of 1970. The two scenic rivers in Loudoun - Catoctin Creek to Waterford and the main branch of the Goose Creek - were derived from water bodies, a base map data layer derived by automated processes and processed for cartographic representation at 1:2400 scale. The data are mapped as seen from above and meet the National Map Accuracy Standars (NMAS).

Purpose:

The Virginia Scenic Rivers Program was enabled by the Virginia Scenic Rivers Act of 1970. Within Loudoun County are two Virginia-designated scenic rivers - Catoctin Creek from the town of Waterford to the confluence of the Potomac, and Goose Creek from the confluence of the north and south prongs near Linden to the confluence of the Potomac. These creeks are represented in the Loudoun County GIS using the base map data polygon "water", which is collected via a planimetric update process from aerial photography and processed for a cartographic representation at 1:2400 Scale, and are mapped to National Map Accuracy Standards (NMAS). As the designation is to the main trunk of each stream, tributaries were removed and the polygons were dissolved by name.

Supplemental Information:

The base map water data that the scenic rivers data was created from was updated in 2007, 2008, and 2009. From the photography, it's apparent that 2008 was a dry year, and for the Catoctin in particular, the creek was not as wide in places as it appears to be in the 2012 photography. If at such a time a base map update occurs that better represents the general width of either scenic river, the data may be updated.

Data are stored in the corporate ArcSDE Geodatabase as a polygon feature class. The coordinate system is Virginia State Plane (North), Zone 4501, datum NAD83 HARN, Vertical datum, NAVD88, US Survey foot units.
