This layer contains the boundaries of the four suburban communities defined in the Comprehensive Plan - Ashburn, Dulles, Potomac and Sterling.
Purpose:
The suburban communities differentiate communities of interest as defined in the Comprehensive Plan. The Plan anticipates that there will be four distinct communities within the Suburban Policy Area - Ashburn, Dulles, Potomac and Sterling - that are separated from one another by environmental features and major roads. The data is used extensively and administered by the Department of Planning.

Process_Description:
The Suburban Communities were created using both existing GIS data and through on-screen digitizing of a 2001 map that shows all four Suburban Community Boundaries. Existing data was able to be used because the Suburban Boundaries primarily follow roadways and drainage features.
Four polyline Community Boundary feature classes were created for the Loudoun, Dulles, Potomac, & Sterling Communities. The majority of boundary lines were copied from the Centerline and Drain layers into the appropriate feature class and given the appropriate Community attribute value. The remaining Boundary lines were digitized from a scanned & geo-referenced image of a 2001 Planning map showing the boundaries for all of the Communities. All of the individual lines for each of the Suburban Communities were merged into a single feature, so that polygons could be created for the SDE data library.

A single Suburban Communities Boundary polygon was then created from the four individual feature classes. The create polygon from line PGDB tool was used to create four individual polygons from the line features. Then the four polygons were copied into a newly created Suburban Communities polygon feature class and the appropriate Community value calculated.

Loudoun County distributes spatial data in ArcGIS coverage or shapefile format for the cost of reproduction. Countywide spatial datasets may be purchased for $21 per CD or $22 per DVD for up to 650 MB or 4.5 GB of data, respectively. There is a $10 surcharge to purchase countywide topography, and a $3 charge if the item is to be mailed. If the customer wants the data in DXF format and/or would like OMAGI to custom select specific geographic areas of the County, there is an additional $7 per 15 minute increment labor charge. Select aerial imagery is also available.
