Metadata elements shown with blue text are defined in the Federal Geographic Data Committee's (FGDC) Content Standard for Digital Geospatial Metadata (CSDGM). Elements shown with green text are defined in the ESRI Profile of the CSDGM. Elements shown with a green asterisk (*) will be automatically updated by ArcCatalog. ArcCatalog adds hints indicating which FGDC elements are mandatory; these are shown with gray text.
The Reservoir Protection Zones have been implemented to increase reservoir protection and overall drinking water quality. Additional requirements and standards are to be adhered to in these areas.
Reservoir Protection Zones are areas, as defined in the Facilities Standards Manual (FSM), required to follow additional regulations and development standards to ensure the integrity of public drinking water sources. The data are to be used as tools in the development review and planning phases.
Data are stored in the corporate ArcSDE Geodatabase as a polygon feature class. The coordinate system is Virginia State Plane (North), Zone 4501, datum NAD83 HARN, US Survey foot units.
ground condition
This data is limited to reservoir protection and does not take into account other Public Water Sources, such as public wells and Water intakes from the Potomac River. The protection of these sources should also be considered in the development review and planning efforts. Every reasonable effort has been made to assure the accuracy of these data. Loudoun County Facilities Standards Manual 5.320.D.7, "Reservoir Protection Requirements" adopted on 12/04/2007
To create development buffers, a subset of "water" data to include all Public Water Sources (PWS), as designated by the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ), that were in the form of reservoirs was first created. Reservoir boundaries were taken directly from the water layer, except for Goose Creek Reservoir which was trimmed at a location consistent with DEQ's limits of the reservoir. This data was then buffered 300' using geoprocessing tools. The results constitute the feautes where "RP_TYPE = DEVELOPMENTBUFFER". To create the "Goose Creek Reservoir Protection Area," as defined in the FSM, the dam was first manually selected from the Basemap Misc_Arc dataset. The dam line feature was then buffered 5 miles. In defining the Goose Creek Watershed, features were selected from Majsheds_poly (MA_SUB_CODE = 'GO1' OR MA_SUB_CODE = 'GO2' OR MA_SUB_CODE = 'GO3'). This selection was then clipped to result in all Goose Creek Sub-Watersheds within 5 miles of the Goose Creek Dam. Areas of the subsheds that drain downstream of the dam were then removed.
